One of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s missions is to understand and predict changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts. To help accomplish this goal, Riverside is supporting the Coastal Data Development (CDD) Program activities at the John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi by providing subject matter experts, scientists, and scientific analysts, as well as on-board support of the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer.
Technical Support and Observers for Southeast Fisheries and Science Center (SEFSC)
In the Southeastern United States, where the economy revolves around the oil and fishing industries, it’s imperative that decision makers are working with the most complete and updated data available so that they can react appropriately to environmental shifts. Riverside was awarded the opportunity to assist NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) mission to maintain and protect marine wildlife while working with and supporting the fishing industry.
Storm Surge Model Development for NOAA's Coast Survey Development Laboratory (CSDL)
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, NOAA Coast Survey Development Laboratory (CSDL) was tasked with improving operational storm surge guidance for Eastern and Gulf U.S. coasts, specifically to address the effects of tides, surges, waves, and river inflow. In order to generate that improved guidance, CSDL chose to upgrade the ADvanced CIRCulation Model (ADCIRC), the forecasting model used to predict weather events such as hurricane-track probabilities, and the Riverside team carried out that upgrade.
NOAA Coastal and Marine Work
Riverside supports NMFS scientists with analysis of fishery data to model and assess the populations and health of the nation’s fishery stocks. To support NMFS’ approach to integrated ecosystem assessments, we bring wide-ranging data analysis expertise in marine fisheries, riverine, and watershed hydraulics; socioeconomics; oceanography; and climatic observations for a variety of interrelated customers. We provide an integrated approach to fisheries support, which consists of four dimensions: ecosystem, functional, stakeholder, and management.
