Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Services (AHPS) Program
The Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Services (AHPS) Program improves NOAA’s response capabilities through the development of new scientific advancements in river, flood, and drought forecasting. Using sophisticated meteorological and hydrological computer modeling combined with remote sensing data, AHPS research and activities produce state-of-the-art river and stream forecasts. Riverside Technology, inc. (Riverside) helped NOAA accomplish its goals through the infusion of new science and technology for integrated water resources management using the formulation, planning, and execution of specialized hydrometeorologic, hydrologic, and hydraulic modeling to generate advanced hydrologic forecasting products.
NOAA Climate, Atmospheric, and Hydrologic Science
Riverside has supported the NWS for more than 25 years, including projects such as the NWS in advanced, high-tech activities, river basin model calibration, support for NOAA International Affairs Office (IAO), and flash flood forecast services. We have transitioned ensemble prediction capabilities for the Hydrologic Ensemble Forecast Service (HEFS), supported development of an Analysis of Record for hydrometeorologic forcings for hydrologic models, and implemented real-time flood inundation forecast maps. Riverside has calibrated river basin models for NWS RFCs throughout the United States, and has supported IAO in the transfer of NWS technology around the world including for Mexico, the Panama Canal Authority, and countries throughout Central America. In addition, Riverside works with other research organization such as Colorado State University’s Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), with whom we provide timely and reliable severe weather and hydrologic forecast services to NWS RFCs.
NASA Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Science Decision Support Systems
Under a NASA Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Science Grant, Riverside led an effort using remote sensing data to estimate actual evapotranspiration (ET) on a monthly and seasonal basis within two irrigated agricultural areas. Using the University of Idaho’s Mapping Evapotranspiration at high Resolution using Internalized Calibration (METRIC) algorithm, the Riverside team mapped crop ET in the South Platte River basin in Colorado and in the Middle Rio Grande River basin in New Mexico.
National Weather Service (NWS) Community Hydrologic Prediction System (CHPS) Help Desk Support
Riverside provides technical support to ensure the operational performance and integrity of Community Hydrologic Prediction System (CHPS) by supplementing the specialized CHPS support help desk functions performed by the Hydrology Support Group (HSG) in the Office of Central Processing (OCP) Field Support and Infrastructure Team (FSIT). The HSG provides Tier 1 and Tier 2 support for the CHPS operations at River Forecast Centers (RFCs). The contract staff works alongside the federal HSG members and the specific task requirements are provided by the HSG staff. Historically, the full CHPS support has been handled by a team consisting of 2-3 federal employees supplemented by 2 contract employees. Significant coordination and communication between HSG staff, the RFCs, and other support providers within the National Weather Service (NWS) enterprise is required in order to effectively provide the customer support.
