Real-Time Database Design, Development, and Management

Database Projects

RTi designs and implements real-time relational database systems suitable for basin-wide analysis, whether used in long-term planning or for daily administration. Although time scales between long-term planning and daily administration are different, the same hydrological components and water rights mechanisms must be incorporated at each level. Users can select various modeling components to match the level of detail required in the information.

RTi's real-time database systems serve as the central components of RTi's forecast systems. They are the repository for hydrologic data collected by the data acquisition network and used by other system components. Tools of differing levels of complexity are available to view, analyze, and in some cases, modify the data. These tools help to accommodate the many different levels of users of the system, such as data browsers, operators, engineers, and administrators.

Designed to be flexible and extensible, RTi's database systems allow data administrators to easily create, modify, and delete tables, columns, indices, even entire databases, as the systems evolve. Stations, structures, observations, and other data are added as the scope of the system expands and becomes more complex. In addition, highly interactive graphical user interfaces encourage use and allow direct interaction with individual hydrological, meteorological, water diversion, and water rights databases. Our philosophy is to design generic databases using sound design practices, while also considering the functional and performance requirements of applications and users, and allowing for the use of various database engines.

Applications using relational database systems:

  • Hydrometeorological network design
  • Reservoir operations simulation and optimization
  • Reservoir network analyses and optimization
  • Water supply and demand assessment
  • Streamflow simulation
  • Economic and risk analyses
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
