Riverside Technology, inc. (RTi) worked with the Ohio River Forecast Center (OHRFC) to improve forecasting capabilities in parts of the Ohio River drainage. The projects were conducted as part of the National Weather Service (NWS) implementation of the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Services (AHPS) program. basin sub–areas and 35 reservoirs were calibrated. Hydrologic models were improved for the Big Sandy, Guyandotte, Lower Monongahela, Lower Allegheny, Muskingum, and Kentucky –Salt River basins. These efforts included data analysis and processing of historic precipitation, temperature, and streamflow data, calibration of hydrologic models for snowmelt simulation, soil moisture accounting, hydrologic routing and reservoir operations, and comparison of forecasting capabilities using gaged versus radar–based precipitation estimates. By working in conjunction with the OHRFC, valuable information and experience was exchanged to enhance the forecasting system. The resulting systems have been implemented operationally by the OHRFC for the region.
