Davenport, IA, Flood Forecasting System

Client: City of Davenport
Region: North America
Period: 2000 – 2003

Riverside Technology, inc. was contracted to implement its RiverTrak® system, a real–time hydrologic forecasting application for the City of Davenport, Iowa to improve municipal flood warning and mitigation efforts. The City is bounded on the southerly side by the Mississippi River and is one of the few locations that the river runs in an easterly–westerly direction. Due to the City’s proximity to the Mississippi
none
and Duck Creek, which flows through the middle of town, flooding is a major concern in this community. The RiverTrak® system was selected by the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department to forecast flood events at two locations along Duck Creek, using data from the City’s existing ALERT system and DIAD Inc.’s DIADvisor™ databases. A state–space version of the Sacramento model with a Kalman filter was implemented within RiverTrak&trade Forecaster, using a 10–minute time step, which produces forecasted flows up to 12 hours into the future. Engineers and planners within Davenport’s Public Works Department utilize RiverTrak® Forecaster not only as a warning system during extreme storm events, but also during normal precipitation events to track the progress of stormwater flows through the City’s urban setting.
