The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is a regional partnership among the ten Nile Basin riparian countries, which provides a forum for cooperative transboundary development of the water resources of the Nile River.
Riverside has been responsible for several components of NBI’s planning, design, and assessment documents including the Water Resources Planning and Management Project Implementation Plan, the needs assessment and design of an information management center, and the development of the Eastern Nile planning model project document.
Riverside’s achievements with the NBI have included:
- Organizing and hosting a conference at Riverside offices for water resources ministers from Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia resulting in agreement on the concepts and principles for the Eastern Nile transboundary water resources organization
- Drafting a needs assessment and preliminary design study for an information management center to support the NBI (The Center provides a centralized location for the transboundary coordination of knowledge management, information sharing, and collaboration among the ten countries of the Nile Basin.)
- Developing a Project Implementation Plan (PIP) for Water Resources Planning and Management. (The PIP includes plans for a Decision Support System for the Nile Basin and describes the institutional and technical components for water resources policy, project planning and management for the ten countries of the Nile Basin.)
- Developing Eastern Nile Planning Model Project used to assist in identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing projects as part of the investment planning process
