Bangladesh project highlighted in Sept. 11, 2007 issue of the Coloradoan
Riverside's Bangladesh project was highlighted in the September 11, 2007, issue of the Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper. The article stated that "In conjunction with the Center for Geographic Information Services and Bangladesh Disaster Preparedness Centre, and funded by the U.S. Agency for International Developments Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, Riverside's flood monitoring system sends text messages with a two-day forecast to villagers with cell phones. The two-day forecast not only informs villagers of a predicted rise in river levels but also how much, within about 20 inches. While cell phones in the area are growing in popularity, the program, which started disseminating updates in 2004, reaches about 5 to 10 percent of villagers. That message is then relayed by word-of-mouth when the water in surrounding rivers is rising and by how much."
