Eastern Nile Planning Model
Riverside helped develop, integrate, and implement a hydrologic forecasting system for the Nile River.
Africa and the Mid-East
Since 1993, Riverside has been involved in water resource projects in Africa and the Mid-East, including developing and implementing hydrologic river forecasting systems, planning models, and Decision Support Systems (DSS) along one of the most important rivers in the region - the Nile.
Africa
The Nile River
In the 1990s, Riverside helped with developing and implementing a hydrologic forecasting system for the Nile River, including modeling for the Blue Nile, White Nile, Sobat, and Atbara River Basins, extending across 10 countries. Due to the success of these forecasting efforts, in 2002 the Nile Basin Initiative asked Riverside to develop their large Water Resources Planning and Management Project, particularly focusing on DSS development. Riverside staff helped develop this important project covering the entire Nile River Basin. From 2004 to 2006, Riverside designed a long-term project to develop and install water resources planning models along the Eastern Nile.
South Africa - River Forecast Systems
Starting in 1997, Riverside began work with South Africa's Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, developing an advanced river forecasting system for the Vaal and Orange River Basins.
Mid-East
Iraq Reconstruction
Riverside provided services to USAID's Agriculture Reconstruction & Development project in Iraq. With Iraqi agricultural, technical, and institutional resources severely damaged, Riverside worked with officials from Iraq's Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources to improve water management conditions, particularly focused on the irrigation sector, including demonstrations on improving irrigation efficiencies, small-scale irrigation projects, and training local agricultural staff. At the request of the Ministry of Agriculture, Riverside staff also designed, implemented, and conducted training on a national program of Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ) mapping. Using remote sensing, satellite imagery and GIS modeling techniques, Iraqi and Riverside staff developed models showing land suitability for different crops in Iraq.
